Most retirees aren’t raising young kids. We are.
That’s what makes our retirement search different. Ken is already at retirement age, I’m a few years behind him, and we have two young kids. We would have loved a 55+ community, but those aren’t an option for a family like ours, and we have no regrets about the family we chose. Ken is a Baby Boomer, I’m Gen X, and our kids are Generation Alpha. It makes life interesting, varied, and full of love.
Why we’re looking
We live and work in North San Diego, and we love it. The Mediterranean climate, the coast, and having everything we need nearby are hard to beat. But we don’t plan to work forever, and on a retirement income, California won’t be affordable for us. So we’re starting years ahead to find where we can move and retire comfortably.
Where we’re looking
We’re exploring three very different places:
- Spain, where we have no family but a lot of curiosity
- The Philippines, where my family is
- Pennsylvania, where Ken’s family is
How we’re doing it
Since 2010, we’ve worked at DreamWell Homes Realty in San Diego, helping retirees from all over the country move and retire. We know how they do it, so we’re following the same path: online research first, then interviews with professionals and with people who have already made the move, and finally in-person scouting.
We’ll document all of it here through videos and articles. Eventually, we also hope to offer consulting to help others plan their own move and retirement. Everyone has different criteria, and we’d love to help you work out yours.
We’re building MoveRetire as a family business, something we hope to pass on to our children one day.
